Osprey CSL’s Daimon de Bruyn was pleased to present (online) at the 5th International Hydrogen Aviation Conference (IHAC 2024) , 5th September 2024:

Osprey CSL has proven experience in the certification of novel aircraft platforms in both the civil and defence domains. This presentation explores the challenges facing regulators and operators of future hydrogen-powered aircraft.

The Challenges

Hydrogen is becoming more widely accepted as a viable alternative for fossil fuels, and as part of a fuel solution (hydrogen fuel cells / production of Sustainable Aviation Fuel), however, the safety hazards and risks of hydrogen as a power source in aviation operations will need to be considered and effective controls put in place.  The industry will need to continue to innovate to address these safety challenges with novel propulsion and power system technologies.

Hydrogen aircraft platform developers will need to consider and address, as early in the CADMID cycle as possible, the safety and certification implications as a result of design changes to the aircraft using hydrogen as a power source.  Whilst the certification process is likely to remain the same, the safety and compliance artefacts and means of compliance are likely to differ.

In the military context, certification of hydrogen platforms and air systems may be more challenging and will require building learning from civil certification processes.

Our support

Osprey CSL has the experience and expertise in navigating the certification process for novel platforms and air systems and are well placed to support safety and certification activities for hydrogen platforms and propulsion and power systems.

We have put together a roadmap for platform and propulsion and power system developers to follow, which lists what safety and certification activities should be considered during the development process.

Osprey CSL is a member of Science Group, an international science and technology consultancy and systems organisation. Being part of a larger Group we are able to draw upon the deep technical and scientific expertise of our sister company, Sagentia Innovation, a leading R&D consultancy, active in technology road-mapping for the energy transition and developing enabling technologies for hydrogen, Sustainable Aviation Fuel and battery applications.
