At Osprey we work with defence clients in the provision of technical and operational support to enable defence capability. Our support ranges from Customer Side Support including Front Line Commands, Defence Equipment and Support (DE&S), defence regulators and technical and operational support in the Defence Industry.

We thrive in the complex, innovative, safety-critical & highly regulated environment in which defence operates. We work across the Air, C4ISTAR, Maritime, Land and Space domains to support and solve technical and operational problems which can range from; the transformation of defence ways of working, to the application of novel and innovative technology, equipment and regulations.

Whether you require ad hoc, single-day consultancy, or a multiple-year, multi-disciplined support team, our Subject Matter Experts (SME) have experience and knowledge of all aspects of supporting Defence capability on a diverse range of platforms, equipment, systems and services.

Osprey is a FATS/5 supplier to the MOD, a provider to the Aurora EDP Network holds approval by LRQA to ISO 9001:2015, and is accredited at Cyber Essentials PLUS. We are also a member of Aerospace Defence and Security (ADS) and JOSCAR Stage 2 qualified.

Conventional Aviation

Osprey is at the cutting edge of deploying the very latest concepts and technologies for civil and military customers in the fields of airports, systems, airspace, manned and unmanned air platforms, space, and the environment.  However, it is equally important to challenge the applicability and suitability of such concepts to ensure they are truly aligned to our customer’s requirements.

We are not seduced by the latest technology or market trends.  Frequently, in whole or part, our solutions include conventional concepts.  This may be because it is the most effective technical solution, it better meets our clients’ commercial or environmental constraints, or they are deployed as a form of safety mitigation or resilience.

Across Instrument Flight Procedure Design, Airports, and Airspace, Air Traffic Management Systems or Platforms, and Air Systems, our highly experienced staff are able to offer a unique depth of understanding and blend of services in conventional aviation.  However, we also have the technical confidence and competence to combine these with emerging concepts to deliver our clients the most effective, efficient and appropriate solutions.

Digital Technology and Artificial Intelligence

The use of digital technology has increased exponentially in the last few years with operational deployments now providing a regulatory approved service at locations in the UK and around the world.  As we move to a more digital and connected world, existing operations and services will both benefit from the technology, but it also provides additional complexity.

The use of Artificial Intelligence (AI) and Machine Learning is also an area of current and future growth across all sectors. AI and Machine Learning will create huge opportunities in the way current civil and military capabilities are realised but will also present huge challenges from a regulatory and safety critical perspective.

Osprey can support clients in development of a Digital Solutions for new or existing operational environments, which includes, aerodrome, surveillance control and platforms.

UAS and C-UAS

The number of Uncrewed Air Systems (UAS) in use and their capabilities is growing rapidly; from aerial filming, parcel delivery, agricultural survey, emergency response, defence, rail line and wind turbine inspections.

The ultimate aim is to safely integrate UAS into the total aviation system without any increased hazard to other airspace users whilst providing protection against UAS misuse.  In achieving this objective an incremental approach must be taken whilst remaining agile to any regulatory or standards development in this fast moving environment.

Despite the proliferation of Visual Line of Sight (VLOS) systems there is now a real ambition to push the technology and regulatory boundaries to operate in a Beyond VLOS (BVLOS) environment and in more automated ways.  Societal and safety concerns & risks need to be completely understood and managed in a controlled manner.

Advanced Air Mobility

Advanced Air Mobility can be defined as the integration new air systems and technologies into new and the existing aviation infrastructure with the aim of moving people and cargo in a distributed and more sustianble way. Advanced Air Mobility is often seen as ‘Air Taxis’ or eVTOLs, but it is much more;  everything from the air vehicles, supporting infrastructure, Unified Traffic Management systems, data management, new airspace design and route planinng to name a few.

As a specialist aviation consultancy with a wide range of highly relevant and complimentary capabilities, our support is highly relevant to the growing AAM market.

We have an established background in delivering innovative concepts for our clients, which is based on;

  • Our technical expertise in delivering the constituent elements of AAM is proven in both civil and military settings.
  • Our flexible, innovative and imaginative approach to such challenges, particularly in the field of safety assurance and systems engineering, where we deliver ‘first of type’ and novel solutions to the complete satisfaction of the Regulator.

Our support services apply to many different organisations wanting to implement an AAM solution or even just considering whether AAM is an option

Sustainable Aviation

Sustainable Aviation is a broad term which covers the entire aviation sector but is ultimately about the reduction of carbon emissions to Net Zero by 2050. UK aviation announced decarbonisation targets of at least 15% by 2030 and 40% by 2040, having reaffirmed their commitment to net-zero by 2050. The RAF have stated their target as being Carbon Net Zero by 2040.

Ultimately a holistic approach to decarbonisation will need to be applied by the entire aviation sector if targets are going to be achieved. The Sustainable Aviation pillars as shown below shows the areas in which technology and investment will be required in order to achieve the ambitious targets set.

To help find an acceptable interim mitigation for a proposed Wind Farm, LSA approached Osprey as recognised leaders in Wind Turbine Mitigation methods. As part of their remit Osprey reviewed the potential capabilities of the local radar as well as other mitigation technologies in relation to the anticipated turbine effects and our Operational Requirement. Based on their assessment of the available solutions, the local airspace environment and the demanding project timescales, the use of a Non Automatic Initiation Zone (NAIZ) was proposed.

Osprey subsequently developed the Radar Sensor Safety Case to include the NAIZ and supported LSA through the subsequent discussions with CAA SARG. As a result of these discussions the NAIZ was accepted into operational service prior to turbine operation.

The solution has subsequently worked well and has proven itself to be the right decision for the mitigation of the Wind Farm.

I would readily recommend Osprey to any ANSP seeking supportive and informed assistance in establishing mitigation of Wind Turbines on Approach Radars.

Osprey’s expertise and specialist support have allowed Defence Equipment & Support to develop with confidence the equipment safety and airworthiness framework for the introduction of the A400M to service with the Royal Air Force. At a critical time in the aircraft’s life cycle, Osprey provided a principal consultant to cover the responsibilities of the Safety Manager and dedicated support to develop the Platform Safety Assessment.

The A400M PT has relied heavily on the professional commitment and specialist knowledge of Osprey consultants to develop and implement a credible Safety Management System and to mentor full-time members of staff joining the Project Team to positions where they are competent to hold a Letter of Airworthiness Authority. Consistently, Osprey has added significant value to the A400M Project and has a key part in the governance and assurance of A400M equipment safety and airworthiness.

A400M Safety Manager, DE&S, MOD

Many thanks to the Osprey team for developing and delivering the recent ATM Safety Awareness and ATM Safety Practitioners courses for Cobham.  The feedback from my team has been extremely positive.  Everyone enjoyed the training and felt that they could apply the learning across many of our current programmes.  The extensive ATM & Safety experience and expertise of the Osprey course tutors was very apparent, which contributed to the overall success of the training.

Quality & Safety Manager, Cobham

The successful delivery of this significant ATC project would not have been possible were it not for the support of Osprey CSL and I’d like to thank them for their work.  Working closely with our project team, they helped to take an aspiration and turn it into a viable project that could be delivered within time and on budget. We have worked with Osprey before and I’m pleased with their technical knowledge and willingness to further enhance the technical excellence already present within our airport in order to form the most effective delivery team possible.

Osprey’s detailed evaluation of Gatwick’s ATC assets highlighted their unique ability to deliver a complex requirement within a challenging timeline.  Osprey demonstrated a high level of competence and experience that clearly demonstrated their understanding of the technical landscape and the strategic needs of our airport.  Their professional and collaborative approach ensured they worked closely with all key stakeholders to deliver the intended outcomes of the study on time and on budget. We were particularly impressed by their ability to flex their resources to meet our priorities.  I have no hesitation in recommending Osprey for future aviation projects of this nature.
