The space sector is one of the fastest growing industries in the UK and has the potential to put us right at the forefront of the worldwide launch market for small commercial satellites and sub-orbital flight from UK spaceports.
At Osprey, a tpgroup company, we are passionate about space and committed to solving the most complex challenges for our clients by drawing on our aviation and complex system knowledge and experience to turn novel and ‘first of type’ ideas into solutions that deliver real and measurable benefits.
We offer a growing portfolio of safety and engineering services for Spaceports and Launch Service Operators (LSO) supported by our understanding of the Space Industry Act (and Secondary Legislation) and US Federal Aviation Authority Administrator for Space Transportation (FAA AST) regulations. Our experts have extensive knowledge and experience of the platforms and equipment that are highly relevant to spaceports and space launch operations.
We are currently working on some really exciting projects with our clients to plan new spaceports, design airspace, optimise the safety of operations and provide independent safety assessment and assurance of launch vehicles.
To mark #NationalSpaceDay, here are just a few examples of how we are making a difference and helping to shape the space industry.
Space Hub Sutherland
Osprey is proud to be part of the team supporting Highlands and Islands Enterprise (HIE) in the development of a £17.3 million satellite launch spaceport at the A’Mhoine peninsula in Sutherland.
The project, known as ‘Space Hub Sutherland’, is set to become the UK’s first commercial vertical launch facility. The ambitious plans will see vehicles carrying commercial satellites launched vertically into space for earth observation. Osprey is thrilled to be part of such a unique and exciting venture and will support HIE in developing the airspace solution for the spaceport.
Consortium led review of the Space Industry Act 2018
Osprey recently led an industry consortium to review the draft secondary legislation of the Space Industry Act 2018, to provide a co-ordinated response to the UK Government consultation and to inform them of the potential risks and opportunities that UK Spaceports would face in complying with the proposed legislation.
We believe that our response is unique in the market as we collaborated with Subject Matter Experts from all disciplines in the framework to give the most constructive feedback to the draft regulations as possible.
The consultation document states that most of the secondary legislation is expected to be in place by Q3 2021, which will be a pivotal moment for the industry. We now await the next steps and look forward to working with our clients to progress their spaceflight ambitions.
Providing independent assurance of a sub-orbital launch vehicle
Our latest project is working with Skyrora Ltd, a space launch company renowned for developing versatile, cost-effective and environmentally responsible launch vehicles for small payloads.
Osprey is providing independent assurance of the Skylark L sub-orbital launch vehicle safety case, harnessing our experience in novel and ‘first of type’ safety cases. Our safety assurance activities will consider multiple facets of space launch given the Skylark L’s impressive capability and Skyrora’s complete launch service offering.
The Future
As part of tpgroup, our expert team are supported by the proven expertise of tpgroup’s multi-disciplinary teams delivering into the space domain including space systems, cost, safety and software engineering. We are proud of our collective contribution to the space sector to date and will strive to influence and shape the way the space industry continues to evolve and be right at the forefront of innovation.
