We are delighted to welcome Alastair Balderstone to Osprey. Alastair is an aviation safety professional with extensive experience in demanding technical roles with significant airworthiness, safety, management and budgetary responsibilities.
He joins us from the Royal Air Force (RAF) where he has been providing technical advice and support across the entire airworthiness spectrum for over 35 years. He has served as an Engineer Officer on front line Tornado fighter and bomber units, including 2 operational tours in the Middle East; as the Continuing Airworthiness Manager for the entire UK military training aircraft fleet (400 aircraft of 12 different types); and held formal type airworthiness delegation for both the Sentry AWACS aircraft and the RB199 aero engine.
Until recently, Alastair was a Senior Technical Manager in the Military Aviation Authority (MAA). He was the Head of the Mechanical & Propulsion Systems Branch Certification Division leading a team of 10 military and civil service personnel, with responsibility for the certification, regulation, and design standards for aircraft mechanical and propulsion systems across the entire UK military air environment.
Throughout his career Alastair has a track record of successively delivering innovative projects across the air safety domain. Of particular note, he led the work to deliver the MAA’s certification regulations to meet the requirement of the Haddon-Cave Report to introduce an independent military aircraft certification process for all new and upgraded UK military aircraft. Alastair has personally led multiple MAA certification projects ranging from large fixed wing, rotary wing, fast jet through to remotely piloted air systems. These projects culminated in him compiling detailed technical reports on project compliance with MAA airworthiness regulations to the MAA 2 star Technical Director.
Peter Symons, Air Platforms & Systems Team Leader at Osprey said “It’s great to welcome Alastair to the team. His technical knowledge, experience of major air system certification, design organisations and vast operational experience will allow him to add immediate value to a number of important projects we are currently delivering for our clients.”
Alastair will be based in our Bristol office which is located in close proximity to MOD DE&S Headquarters at Abbey Wood.
