Ship Air Integration

The safe provision of aviation activities from ships is addressed through the ‘Ship-Air Integration’ activities and are subject to Statutory Regulation of the Defence Maritime Regulator (DMR) and Military Aviation Authority (MAA). To ensure respective Aviation and Ship authorities can achieve the required Certification and Release for the applicable systems or the capabilities Safety Cases / Assessments demonstrate that the systems are ‘Fit for Purpose’ and ‘Safe’.

Osprey have established a solid track record in the integration, development and delivery of both simple and complex Safety Cases and Safety Assessments across new and extant systems and capabilities.  Osprey have also developed strategies and training to aid the maritime aviation stakeholder communities to understand, harmonise and optimise their regulatory deliverables. We have led the delivery and successful certification of the Air Traffic Management (ATM) activities for the Queen Elizabeth Class Aircraft Carriers and supported the Platform and Equipment Authorities in the development of regulatory compliant Safety Cases for approval by the MAA.

Our range of expertise in the development and management of ship-air integration artefacts across military and civil projects allows us to transfer knowledge and good practice across our clients. We are highly competent at several methodologies such as Goal Structuring Notation (GSN) and Claims Arguments and Evidence approaches and their associated tools. We are conversant with the regulatory processes required by the UK MOD, DMR, MAA, and International Regulators. We have received praise from our clients and the regulators for the clarity and accuracy of our work, often with first time approval of our submissions.

To help find an acceptable interim mitigation for a proposed Wind Farm, LSA approached Osprey as recognised leaders in Wind Turbine Mitigation methods. As part of their remit Osprey reviewed the potential capabilities of the local radar as well as other mitigation technologies in relation to the anticipated turbine effects and our Operational Requirement. Based on their assessment of the available solutions, the local airspace environment and the demanding project timescales, the use of a Non Automatic Initiation Zone (NAIZ) was proposed.

Osprey subsequently developed the Radar Sensor Safety Case to include the NAIZ and supported LSA through the subsequent discussions with CAA SARG. As a result of these discussions the NAIZ was accepted into operational service prior to turbine operation.

The solution has subsequently worked well and has proven itself to be the right decision for the mitigation of the Wind Farm.

Osprey’s expertise and specialist support have allowed Defence Equipment & Support to develop with confidence the equipment safety and airworthiness framework for the introduction of the A400M to service with the Royal Air Force. At a critical time in the aircraft’s life cycle, Osprey provided a principal consultant to cover the responsibilities of the Safety Manager and dedicated support to develop the Platform Safety Assessment.

The A400M PT has relied heavily on the professional commitment and specialist knowledge of Osprey consultants to develop and implement a credible Safety Management System and to mentor full-time members of staff joining the Project Team to positions where they are competent to hold a Letter of Airworthiness Authority. Consistently, Osprey has added significant value to the A400M Project and has a key part in the governance and assurance of A400M equipment safety and airworthiness.

At short notice Osprey picked up and delivered, to the CAA, an extremely well researched piece of UAS analysis with a number of recommendations that we can take forward into delivery. The work is high risk and will inform political decision making in the UK and set a precedent across the world. The work they have delivered to date has met the agreed scope and quality. They have delivered to the timeframe and within the cost agreed without the need to direct or oversee the detail, which was extremely important especially when one of the reasons for the commercial arrangement with Osprey was due to internal resource constraints. Osprey’s detailed evaluation of Gatwick’s ATC assets highlighted their unique ability to deliver a complex requirement within a challenging timeline.  Osprey demonstrated a high level of competence and experience that clearly demonstrated their understanding of the technical landscape and the strategic needs of our airport.  Their professional and collaborative approach ensured they worked closely with all key stakeholders to deliver the intended outcomes of the study on time and on budget.
