Audits and Assurance

Scroll

One of the fundamental aspects of safety assurance is to conduct audits against the Safety Management System (SMS) to determine that safety is being adequately addressed at all levels with a project or service.  Osprey have many years of experience conducting safety audits against a wide range of products and services. This includes the audit of specific activities, to the audit of complete SMS and includes the specific audit function conducted by an Independent Safety Auditor (ISA).

Similar principles apply to the operational and technical environs.  We have extensive experience of auditing operational and engineering procedures, including resource allocation to meet these needs.

At Osprey, our team has experience as (Lead) safety auditors with detailed knowledge of all aspects of planning and conducting safety, functional and technical audits on a diverse range of platforms, settings, and equipment.

We can support you in the following areas:

  • Audit of Safety Management Plans and/or the entire SMS
  • Audit of specific safety or training activities or technical capabilities/services
  • Compliance audit against safety regulation
  • System compliance audit of technical equipment/services against the client need and defined user/system requirements
  • Audit and review of operational procedures and working practises, including resource assessment/deployment

Independent Safety Advisor (ISA) / Auditor

Using a broad and knowledgeable pool of staff, Osprey have extensive experience of providing ISA support across a range of complex and novel systems.  We understand the often-unique challenges faced by our client-base and has the detailed knowledge and experience of the legal and safety regulatory framework to provide effective and flexible support to meet the demands of the programme deliverables.

This ISA role recognises that fully objective safety assurance requires a view that is truly independent of the Client and the Supplier. In particular the ISA must determine that the regulatory and other Contractual Safety Requirements have been both understood and fully met in relation to the scope of supply. In addition, the ISA must establish that the rigour of the System Safety Case is appropriate to the level of safety risk presented by the system and the supporting arguments and evidence is complete, compelling, and accurate.  Typically, the Osprey approach to ISA support is to nominate a highly experienced and competent main ISA supported by a team of other highly competent Subject Matter Experts (SME).

Osprey operate in accordance with the “Code of Practice for Independent Safety Assessors”.

I have been exceptionally pleased with the manner that Osprey have supported the Operator Training Delivery.  The response to requests for support particularly with a programme which has fluid timelines and often required last minute changes or short notice requests were well received.  Furthermore, on every occasion Simon Kirby was professional, flexible and accommodating ensuring we were able to meet key milestones particularly with the quick completion of the Training Reports.  Moreover, the feedback from our customers was excellent and we always received highly positive feedback on the delivery of the training.

As part of the overarching aviation safety case for MARS Tanker, Osprey were requested at very short notice to provide independent safety assurance for the new to service Kelvin Hughes ATM radar. The task was agreed and completed within a week fully meeting Project expectations and timeline enabling the ATM case to progress to the regulatory acceptance phase on time.

At short notice Osprey picked up and delivered, to the CAA, an extremely well researched piece of UAS analysis with a number of recommendations that we can take forward into delivery. The work is high risk and will inform political decision making in the UK and set a precedent across the world. The work they have delivered to date has met the agreed scope and quality. They have delivered to the timeframe and within the cost agreed without the need to direct or oversee the detail, which was extremely important especially when one of the reasons for the commercial arrangement with Osprey was due to internal resource constraints. The review and report they have completed will feed directly into UK Government policy as well as influence European and International policy direction for RPAS.

Civil Aviation Authority

Osprey has been contracted by my department since March 2014 to develop, author and maintain the Platform Safety Assessment (PSA)/ Safety Case for the UK Fleet of 22 A400M aircraft.  They have consistently demonstrated a comprehensive understanding of the A400M Type Certification Basis (TCB) as well as the various Defence Standards and Regulatory Publications that are appropriate to A400M.  Their work has been completed to the highest standards and they have offered my team flexible and pragmatic solutions to some very complex problems.  I would have no hesitation in recommending Osprey to any future organisation within the Air Safety and Airworthiness arena.

Osprey’s expertise and specialist support have allowed Defence Equipment & Support to develop with confidence the equipment safety and airworthiness framework for the introduction of the A400M to service with the Royal Air Force. At a critical time in the aircraft’s life cycle, Osprey provided a principal consultant to cover the responsibilities of the Safety Manager and dedicated support to develop the Platform Safety Assessment.

The A400M PT has relied heavily on the professional commitment and specialist knowledge of Osprey consultants to develop and implement a credible Safety Management System and to mentor full-time members of staff joining the Project Team to positions where they are competent to hold a Letter of Airworthiness Authority. Consistently, Osprey has added significant value to the A400M Project and has a key part in the governance and assurance of A400M equipment safety and airworthiness.
