Safety Case and Assessment

Scroll

Where “Safety of Life” is a concern, aerospace systems and services are subject to Statutory Regulation.  Safety Cases / Assessments are a critical part of any safety related or safety critical project and are often essential to licensing submissions and approvals to operate.

Safety Cases / Assessments are unique to the system or service and provide a logical argument that a system or service is acceptably safe by design, and that this level of safety can be sustained through its operational life. The arguments are supported by objective evidence including risk-based assessments and are documented in a Safety Case / Assessment Report.

Osprey has established itself as a market leader in the development of Safety Cases and Safety Assessments across first of type technology projects, developing and conventional technologies for safety critical and highly regulated sectors and specifically the air and space domains. To date we had over 350 Safety Cases approved by the UK aviation regulators. We also have first-hand experience in developing and managing Air System Safety Cases (multi-faceted Safety arguments).

Our range of expertise in the development and management of safety cases across military and civil projects allows us to transfer knowledge and good practice across our clients. This experience allows us to advise on ‘what good looks like’ and the most efficient way of achieving the objective. Our experience developing and managing safety cases to the following areas means we are able to support you with your Safety Case requirement in the following areas:

  • First of type technologies and conventional Aerospace Systems
  • Airports and Spaceports
  • Air Traffic Management / Uncrewed Traffic Management
  • Airspace change
  • Wide Ecosystems such as Advanced Air Mobility, Drone Operations and System of Systems
  • Air Systems Safety Cases
  • Commodity Equipment and Assets

We are highly competent at a number of methodologies such as Goal Structuring Notation (GSN), Claims Arguments and Evidence approaches and their associated tools. We are conversant with the regulatory processes required by the UK Ministry of Defence (MOD), CAA, Military Aviation Authority (MAA), and International Regulators. We have received praise from our clients and the regulators for the clarity and accuracy of our work, often with first time approval of our submissions.

I have been exceptionally pleased with the manner that Osprey have supported the Operator Training Delivery.  The response to requests for support particularly with a programme which has fluid timelines and often required last minute changes or short notice requests were well received.  Furthermore, on every occasion Simon Kirby was professional, flexible and accommodating ensuring we were able to meet key milestones particularly with the quick completion of the Training Reports.  Moreover, the feedback from our customers was excellent and we always received highly positive feedback on the delivery of the training.

Osprey has been contracted by my department since March 2014 to develop, author and maintain the Platform Safety Assessment (PSA)/ Safety Case for the UK Fleet of 22 A400M aircraft.  They have consistently demonstrated a comprehensive understanding of the A400M Type Certification Basis (TCB) as well as the various Defence Standards and Regulatory Publications that are appropriate to A400M.  Their work has been completed to the highest standards and they have offered my team flexible and pragmatic solutions to some very complex problems.  I would have no hesitation in recommending Osprey to any future organisation within the Air Safety and Airworthiness arena.

The team at Osprey were outstanding in their approach to our project and throughout the timeline the team were fully supportive with their communication and interaction.

The output from the team proved to me that they deliver high quality pieces of work.

Osprey’s expertise and specialist support have allowed Defence Equipment & Support to develop with confidence the equipment safety and airworthiness framework for the introduction of the A400M to service with the Royal Air Force. At a critical time in the aircraft’s life cycle, Osprey provided a principal consultant to cover the responsibilities of the Safety Manager and dedicated support to develop the Platform Safety Assessment.

The A400M PT has relied heavily on the professional commitment and specialist knowledge of Osprey consultants to develop and implement a credible Safety Management System and to mentor full-time members of staff joining the Project Team to positions where they are competent to hold a Letter of Airworthiness Authority. Consistently, Osprey has added significant value to the A400M Project and has a key part in the governance and assurance of A400M equipment safety and airworthiness.

To help find an acceptable interim mitigation for a proposed Wind Farm, LSA approached Osprey as recognised leaders in Wind Turbine Mitigation methods. As part of their remit Osprey reviewed the potential capabilities of the local radar as well as other mitigation technologies in relation to the anticipated turbine effects and our Operational Requirement. Based on their assessment of the available solutions, the local airspace environment and the demanding project timescales, the use of a Non Automatic Initiation Zone (NAIZ) was proposed.

Osprey subsequently developed the Radar Sensor Safety Case to include the NAIZ and supported LSA through the subsequent discussions with CAA SARG. As a result of these discussions the NAIZ was accepted into operational service prior to turbine operation.

The solution has subsequently worked well and has proven itself to be the right decision for the mitigation of the Wind Farm.

I would readily recommend Osprey to any ANSP seeking supportive and informed assistance in establishing mitigation of Wind Turbines on Approach Radars.
