At Osprey, a tpgroup company, we are passionate about space and committed to solving the most complex challenges for our clients by drawing on our aviation and complex system knowledge and experience to turn novel and ‘first of type’ ideas into solutions that deliver real and measurable benefits.

We offer a growing portfolio of safety and engineering services for Spaceports and Launch Service Operators (LSO) supported by our understanding of the Space Industry Act (and Secondary Legislation) and US Federal Aviation Authority Administrator for Space Transportation (FAA AST) regulations. Our experts have extensive knowledge and experience of platforms and equipment that are highly relevant to spaceports and space launch operations.

We are currently working with our clients to plan new spaceports, design airspace, optimise the safety of operations and provide independent safety assessment and assurance of launch vehicles.

To mark #WorldSpaceWeek2021, here are just a few examples of how we are making a difference and helping to shape the space industry.

Space Hub Sutherland

Osprey is proud to be part of the team supporting Highlands and Islands Enterprise (HIE) in the development of a £17.3 million satellite launch spaceport at the A’Mhoine peninsula in Sutherland.

The project, known as ‘Space Hub Sutherland’, is set to become the UK’s first commercial vertical launch facility. The ambitious plans will see vehicles carrying commercial satellites launched vertically into space for earth observation. Osprey is thrilled to be part of such a unique and exciting venture and will support HIE in developing the airspace solution for the spaceport.

Consortium led review of the Space Industry Act 2018

Osprey led an industry consortium to review the draft secondary legislation of the Space Industry Act 2018, to provide a co-ordinated response to the UK Government consultation and to inform them of the potential risks and opportunities that UK Spaceports would face in complying with the proposed legislation.

We believe that our response was unique in the market as we collaborated with Subject Matter Experts from all disciplines in the framework to give the most constructive feedback to the draft regulations as possible.

Now fully endorsed by the UK Government, the spaceflight regulations provide the framework to regulate the UK industry and will enable launches to take place from British soil for the very first time. Safe and sustainable growth of the UK spaceflight sector requires efficient and effective regulation, and we are proud of our contribution in helping to shape this regulatory framework. We continue to support our clients to progress their spaceflight ambitions in compliance with the new regulations.

Providing independent assurance of a sub-orbital launch vehicle

Osprey is working with Skyrora Ltd, a space launch company that represents a new breed of private rocket companies developing the next generation of launch vehicles for the burgeoning small satellite market.

Osprey is providing independent assurance of the Skylark-L sub-orbital launch vehicle safety case, harnessing our experience in novel and ‘first of type’ safety cases.  Our assurance activities will consider multiple facets of space launch given the Skylark L’s impressive capability and Skyrora’s complete launch service offering.

The Group

Our sister companies in tpgroup also have significant experience in the space sector with long lasting relationships providing upstream and downstream services with the European Space Agency (ESA), NATO Communications and Information Agency (NCIA), the UK MOD, Thales-Alenia and Airbus Defence & Space to name a few. This group-wide capability in space allows us to harness capabilities and skill sets to offer our clients a multidiscipline offering under one roof. Some examples of our wider capabilities in the Space Sector include:

  • SKYNET programme providing client-side support with capability in Operational Analysis, Business Case Development, Cost Engineering, Acquisition and Procurement Support, Technology Road Mapping and Modelling and Simulation.
  • Programme, Project Support, Space Engineering, Earth Observation Engineering, Configuration Management, Software Engineering to ESA and the NATO Communications and Information Agency (NCIA).
  • Recruitment Process Outsourcing – providing solutions for space companies with complex resource challenges.

The Future

We are proud of our collective contribution to the space sector to date and will strive to influence and shape the way the space industry continues to evolve and be right at the forefront of innovation.
